Web of Science is a comprehensive citation and indexing database powered by Clarivate. It covers 250+ subject categories, including sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities, and emerging global research. The database indexes over 97 million records for journals, conferences, and books. Users can obtain a variety of metrics, such as citation counts, h-index, and journal impact factors, from this database.
Web of Science can create a citation report and calculate h-index for individual author. To do so, you have to:
- perform an Author Search first;
- then create your own Citation Report.
- Go to Web of Science, then go to the “Advanced Search” page.
- Click “Researchers” and enter the author’s last name and first name in the search boxes.

- On the results page, refine the search by Authors, Affiliations, and other fields to find the author(s) you are looking for.
- Select the target author record.

You will then enter the author’s profile. Under “Web of Science Core Collection metrics”, click on the number above “Publications”.

This will direct you to a document search results page that displays the publications by the searched author, and the citation statistics of the publications.
You may create a Citation Report on the document search results page. This report shows aggregate citation statistics and calculates the h-index of the displayed records.
- Once you perform an author search and reach the documents search results page, click “Citation Report” to see the full report.
- If you would like to create a citation report based on selected publications, first select the target records and click “Add to Marked List”. Then, go to "Marked List"
in the menu on the left, select your list, and click “Citation Report”.

To export the citation report, click “Export Full Report”, name the file, choose the records range, and choose to download in Excel or Text format. Click “Export”.
