2. Library Resources

The Library subscribes to  a rich collection of electronic resources, available 24x7 through the Internet.

These include:

E-Databases: Over 315 electronic databases and reference tools.
E-Books: Over 1,303,000 full-text electronic books online.
E-Journals: Over 81,500 full-text electronic journals.
E-Newspapers: Thousands of full-text electronic newspapers online.
Local TV Programmes: Access to selected local TV Programmes.
Lectures & Seminars (Lingnan Videos): Consists of online videos of lectures and seminars held in the University.
Internet Resources: A large number of selected internet resources organized by subject areas.
Language Learning Online: Online materials for learning and practicing a number of different languages, such as English, French, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, and Putonghua.

Off-Campus Access to Library Electronic Resources

Due to licensing restrictions, most online resources are available to Lingnan staff and students only.

When you are off the campus, you will be prompted to login with your username and password of your Lingnan email account before you can access Library's licensed online resources.

To access "Lingnan Access Only" video programmes (e.g. Local TV Programmes On Demand) from off campus, you need to use SSL VPN service. Read the Installation Guides to Lingnan University VPN Service at:

Print & Non-Print Resources


The Library holds more than 545,000 volumes of books. Books for circulation are shelved on 1/F & 3/F. Large books with the prefix LBK are located on 1/F North (class A-N) and 3/F (class P-Z)

Reference Materials

The Reference Collection, located on 1/F South, are materials that provide definitions, quick facts, statistics and overviews on a topic. With a prefix REF in its call number, the collection is restricted to Library use only.

Popular and frequently used dictionaries are placed on dictionary stands throughout the Library.

Reserve Materials

The Reserve Collection houses textbooks and supplementary materials recommended by the academic staff. They are available on 1/F Circulation Counter . These materials are non-renewable with shorter loan period due to a high demand from students.

Reserve materials can be searched by course or instructor from the COURSE RESERVES tab on 1-Search. You can also access electronic reserve materials from this tab.


The Library provides over 1,040 print journals. Both current and back issues of print journals are kept in the Reading room of 1/F North , 2/F South on open shelves or in the compact shelves. Rarely used bound journals are stored in closed stack. To gain access to these journals, please contact our Library staff.


A variety of local and foreign magazines is available at 1/F North Reading Room. Back copies are kept behind the racks. All magazines are for Library use only.


The Library subscribes to more than 24 local and overseas newspapers in print version. Current issues are kept in the newspaper racks on 1/F Reading Room while back issues are shelved on 1/F Back Issue Newspapers Room (MB 101/12). The Library also subscribes to many online databases for online news clippings such as WiseNews, LexisNexis Academic, and Factiva.

AV Materials

The AV & Multimedia Collections are located in the Multimedia and Language Learning Centre (MLLC) on 2/F North. It houses over 188,000 items of media resources such as audio and video tapes, laser discs, multimedia packages, VCD, DVD, computer software, compact discs, local TV Programmes, interactive videodiscs, slides and microforms.

Special Collections

Thread-bound Chinese classics are kept in the Special Collections that is located on 1/F South. They are available upon request at the Circulation Counter and restricted to Library use only.
