Hong Kong is a multicultural city, but the term 'ethnic minorities' often carries a pejorative meaning - 'minorities' (as opposed to 'expats'), tends to refer to those who are in the lower socio-economic ebb, and face social and everyday marginalization. Yet some ethnic/ racial 'minority' youths have strived to realize their aspiration, in Hong Kong, and make their mark with their creative talents, while expressing their attachment to the city where they feel belong.

This seminar invites some of these youths to share their stories of success, but more importantly to discuss their views on the prospects of realizing cultural and racial diversity in Hong Kong: what makes a place 'cosmopolitan'? They will share their experience of coping with life as a migrant, their struggles and ways to overcome problems in their new domicile, and managing racial aggression. The discussion will also include a launch of the book “Ethnic Minorities, Media and Participation in Hong Kong: Creative and Tactical Belonging“ authored by Prof. Lisa LEUNG.
