Jump and ride (19 Jun 2008)

Producer: Marie Hung; Since the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, the equestrian events are categorized into dressage, jumping and eventing. In August 2008, these dynamic and elegant competitions will be staged in Hong Kong again. Less than six-month before the events, the staff of the Equestrian Company have been stepping up all aspects of the preparation in order to make the competition a success. The Olympic test event held in August 2007 was a good chance for them to practise. Gerald Kuh, the Jumping Manager, is busy in working with Palacios Leopoldo, the Jumping Course Designer from Federation Equestre Internatinale. Starting from the Olympic test event, to the end of the Olympics, they work closely together. After all, the requirements of the venues of the Olympic equestrian events are the most stringent among the world. The last test event in August was held under bad weather. It was, in fact, a blessing in disguise. It offered a wonderful opportunity of testing the Equestrian Company. Even in the rain, all players can enjoy the excellent venues. The Hong Kong Sports Institute in Shatin received good comments for its capability of handling the rainy weather. The equestrian athletes also took this opportunity to properly prepare for the Beijing Olympic Games. Hong Kong's Paralympic equestrian team invited an Australian national team coach to Hong Kong for improving athletes ’ technique. Nelson Yip, who has been qualified for the Olympic Games, has been sweating for his first Olympics. He wants to make good results. While athletes and the organizers are all dedicating to this world event, we are cheering for them. It is also time for the Hong Kong people to think about how to prepare ourselves to commit to this great sporting event.
