There were ebbs and flows in the jianghu of the martial arts cinema of the 1950s: Emei swordmen’s daggers and stunts predominated for a while, then giving way to the fists and kicks of the Southern Master Wong Fei-hung. While the tide of Wong Fei-hung subsided, the neo-martial arts of the eagle-shooting hero emerged. Each of these different streams of wuxia cinema indeed has its origins in wuxia fiction. The rise and fall of the martial arts cinema of the 1950s will be read in juxtaposition with the genealogy of martial arts fiction in the seminar conducted by our expert from the Hong Kong Film Archive.
