Library Notice

If you have already used these ways to access the Library's e-resources from off-campus but still encounter problems, please try the following solutions:

Try a different browser and access the e-resources again. This will eliminate possible factors including incompatibility of a certain e-resource with a particular browser, or interference caused by certain browser settings. Common web browsers are linked below:

Open a private window in your browser and access the e-resources again. This will eliminate issues caused by an extension, cookie, or cache. Steps for doing this in different browsers are linked below:

Clear your browser’s cache and try to access the e-resources again. This will eliminate problems caused by the cache. Steps for doing this in different browsers are linked below:

Check your browser version and update it to the latest release (if needed). This will eliminate problems caused by outdated browser versions, settings, plugins, etc. Steps for checking the browser version you are using, and updating it are linked below:

Perform a hard refresh in your browser. On your keyboard, hold down the "Shift” key on your keyboard and click on the refresh icon on your browser’s toolbar, or press the following keyboard commands:

  • Chrome, Firefox, or Edge for Windows: Press Ctrl + F5, Shift + F5, or Ctrl + Shift + R
  • Chrome or Firefox for Mac: Press Shift + Command + R
  • Safari for Mac: Command (⌘) + Option (⌥) + R

Start your search and access the e-resource via the library's homepage or 1-Search, instead of starting your search in search engines or clicking directly on any saved links/bookmarks. You will be asked to login using your Lingnan username and passwords, which will then enable you to access the e-resources from off-campus. You may also try the Library’s Bookmarklet tools to access the e-resources.

In case you have subscribed to another VPN service, please disconnect and use the VPN service provided by the University.

Restart your computer and attempt a fresh login. This may clear the computer of possible bugs or improper settings that were blocking access.

Check if the e-resource you are using has restricted the number of users to access at one time. You may find this information in 1-Search. The license information of the database will show the concurrent users allowed for the database.

  • Most of our e-resources can be used by our staff and student only. For Alumni and External Card Users with database access privileges, you may refer to this page for the list of databases that can be accessed.
  • Library will block user if the library account has any service blocks, long overdue items or fines reached HK$30. For more details, please refer to the Fines and Fees page. Or you can double-check your library authorisation at the Library Service Counter, via 2616-8586, or by email to the Library. This will eliminate any problems with your account. For example, in certain cases, you may be inactive or blocked.
